Burrowing Owls in the Media

Burrowing Owls have been an important cultural symbol and have been referenced in popular culture several different times. The owls are especially common in children’s literature. The most prominent mention of burrowing owls is the Young-Adult novel Hoot by Carl Hiaasen. The book was adapted into a movie starring Logan Lerman and Luke Wilson and with music from Jimmy Buffet. The picture book My Little Book of Burrowing Owls by Hope Irvin Marston and illustrated by Maria Magdalena Brown was published in 2003. Betty Gilbert published another children’s book about the owls entitled Buffy The Burrowing Owl in 2008. In 2013, “Binty, the Aboriginal Burrowing Owl Warrior” a comic book whose protagonist was a burrowing owl was published. In 2015, Burrowing Owls, a nonfiction book on the owls written by Melissa Hill was published. Also in 2015 the book Ollie Finds a New Home, The Story of a Burrowing Owl on Marco Island was published. Both Ollie Finds a New Home and Hoot describe the current pressures put on burrowing owls by development.
